John Wesley (1703–1791) is the central formative figure of the Methodist movement and a prolific preacher, organizer, and theological writer whose influence extends across Anglican, Methodist, and broader Protestant histories. Born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, Wesley trained at Christ Church, Oxford, where he and a small group of students established the "Holy Club" in 1729, a disciplined fellowship devoted to prayer, scripture study, and acts of charity. The practices of the Holy Club—regular devotional rhythms, accountability groups, and systematic engagement with the poor—provide the institutional seedbed for the societies, classes, and bands that would characterize Methodist organizational life.
Wesley's ministry is marked by itinerant preaching and a pragmatic approach to pastoral care. Following ordination in the Church of England, Wesley undertook field preaching across England and, later, in the American colonies. The date 24 May 1738—Wesley's account of a "strangely warmed" heart at a meeting on Aldersgate Street in London—has become a touchstone in Methodist hagiography and devotional memory, representing an assurance of justification and a personal appropriation of grace.
